Summary
This is the ninth annual report of the National Advisory Committee on Health and Disability. The Committee is gratified that successive governments and Ministers of Health have valued the advice the Committee has provided since 1992 such that our role has not only been re-affirmed but expanded with the passing of the Public Health and Disability Act 2000.
In addition to the Committee 's role to advise the Minister of Health on "the kinds and relative priorities of public health services, personal health services and disability support services that should, in the Committee 's opinion,be publicly funded ",the public health role of the Committee has been strengthened. The Committee is now required to establish a public health advisory committee to provide independent advice on public health issues, including factors influencing the health of people and communities, the promotion of public health and the monitoring of public health.
The National Health Committee gratefully acknowledges the participation of members of the public, health and disability support professionals, and people in government and non-government agencies in our work.We also appreciate the interest of the Minister of Health.
With continued support, the Committee will be able to provide an independent and balanced view of the publicly-funded health system and public health in New Zealand. We remain committed to improving the health of New Zealanders and reducing health inequalities.
