This report summarises the year's work of the National Advisory Committee on Health and Disability, otherwise known as the National Health Committee (NHC). It also reports on the work of its sub committee, the Public Health Advisory Committee (PHAC).

The NHC and the PHAC are independent committees reporting directly to the Minister of Health on public and personal health services, and disability support services.

Our prime objective is to contribute to improving the health of New Zealanders while also reducing the inequalities that exist in health. Tackling health inequalities cannot be the task of the health system alone. During 2004, the PHAC reported on the relationship between socioeconomic status and health, examining how factors such as income, housing, education and employment play a major part in the ill health people experience during their lifetime, and made recommendations about the role public policy can play in reducing health inequalities.

For all our projects we consult widely with health sector stakeholders and members of the public. Such meetings also provide valuable insights for our future work programme. In July, we held our monthly meeting on the West Coast of the South Island and took part in an extensive round of meetings with both health and non-health professionals. The visit provided us with a better understanding of how those providing health services in isolated communities operate and how innovative they can be in ﬁnding ways to overcome their isolation.

We acknowledge the interest and involvement of members of the public, health and disability support sector professionals, people in government and non-government agencies in our work. We also appreciate the interest and support of the Ministry of Health.
