Discussion document: HIV Screening in Pregnancy

Date of publication: October 2003
Submissions closed: 14 November 2003

Summary
The Ministry of Health asked the NHC to develop appropriate screening programme assessment criteria for New Zealand. Eight screening criteria were developed. This discussion document deals with three screening assessment criteria in relation to HIV antenatal screening and antenatal screening. It asks whether the health care system is capable of supporting all the necessary elements of the screening pathway, and raises social, ethical and cost-benefit issues.

The questions contained in this discussion document were informed by a literature review of each criterion and meetings with key informants. Submissions to the NHC on this discussion document were used to inform the NHC’s final advice to the Minister of Health on whether to change the current policy on antenatal HIV screening in New Zealand.
