How Should We Care For The Carers?

Date of publication: June 1999

Summary
This booklet was produced by the National Health Committee (NHC) and looked at what could make life easier or more difficult for those who care for people with disabilities.

The booklet begins by acknowledging that increasing numbers of people with disabilities are being cared for at home, with the work of those caring for them mostly unrecognised and unpaid. The information in the booklet was taken from what has been written about caring in New Zealand and overseas, and consultation the NHC undertook in 1997 with six groups of carers.

The purpose of the booklet was to prompt discussion among carers, those they care for, those providing support, policy-makers and funders. It wanted those people to respond to ideas in the booklet, with those responses forming the basis of the NHC’s recommendations to the Minister of Health.

The booklet describes what carers do and what they need, suggests what is hindering them from having those needs met and some strategies for meeting those needs.
