Informal Caregivers Literature Review: a report prepared for the National Health Committee

Summary
This literature review explains the growing interest in informal caregivers by researchers and policy makers. It outlines the policy regime in New Zealand and other countries and presents research on the impacts of caregiving on health, employment, finances and social life. International research on supports informal caregivers have found helpful are listed.
Specific populations of caregivers are considered. The relationship between caregiver and recipient and choices made to be a caregiver are discussed. The need to consider Māori concepts of disability and whānau is put forward.
