Literature scan: Utility and Funding of Genetic Testing

Date of publication: April 2003

Summary
This literature scan was commissioned by the NHC to provide information about the thinking, research and critical issues associated with the funding of genetic testing at that time.

There was a widespread recognition in the literature of the importance of genetic technologies for the future of health care services. However, it was noted that issues about the funding of genetic services and genetic testing were only beginning to enter the literature. Genetics has raised complex issues around ethics, law, configuration and regulation of services. The report noted that many of the issues have been difficult to resolve, and some required greater resolution before rational policy decisions on funding could be made.
