To Have an "Ordinary" Life - Background Papers

Date of publication: September 2003

Summary
In early 2001, the NHC began collecting information to build a detailed picture of the lives of adults with an intellectual disability who are supported by publicly funded services in New Zealand. Much of the information was gathered during discussions with people with an intellectual disability, their family and whānau, and those providing services to them.

The project began by gathering demographic information about adults with an intellectual disability. It then reviewed the history of service provision in New Zealand and the national and international movements that affected it. Finally, the NHC sought information about all aspects of the lives of adults with an intellectual disability, exploring support and services available, gaps in services, and considered of essential future supports.
